Recently, I was at the grocery store shopping with my kiddos and we came across the cereal isle. Why does it always seem like they go right for the cereal that is load with sugar? Because of this... I have become known as the "cereal killer" because I "kill" their dreams of getting the cereal they want. Yeah, it's only cute when my 5 year old says it I guess.
I tend to go for what my 5 year old calls the "boring cereal", such as Honey Nut Cheerios, Corn Flakes, or Raisin Bran. But on this particular day my 5 year old caused me to conduct "cereal research" when asked "why are Trix so bad?" I am sure the majority of you are aware of what I am about to explain, but this was super surprising to me! So I thought I would share...
General Mills has marketed its "with whole grain first ingredient" banner on their cereal for quite some time now. I will admit that up until recently I have never really taken notice of the updated nutrition facts or stop to realize that Honey Nut Cheerios is not the only cereal made with whole grain. I have always been a fan of Honey Nut Cheerios, so I grabbed a box of them and a box of the "bad" Trix (both are General Mills products) and wanted to explain to my daughter why my cereal are "better". But as I read down the list of nutrition facts there is not much of difference between the two.
Honey Nut Cheerios per 3/4 cup serving contains: 110 calories, 0 grams of saturated fat, 160 mg of sodium, 9 g of sugars, 10% daily value of calcium and vitamin D
Trix per 1 cup serving contains: 120 calories, 0 grams of saturated fat, 180 mg of sodium, 10 g of sugars, 10% daily value of calcium and vitamin D
It says this right on the front of the box! In addition, approximately 48 grams of whole grain is recommended as part of your daily diet. Trix contains 12 of these grams in one serving and Honey Nut Cheerios contains 14 grams of the daily serving in one 3/4 cup serving.
So the next time you are down the cereal isle and your 5 year old asks for Trix it's okay to say yes!
Now the good stuff!
No Bake Honey Nut Cheerios and Trix Treats
1/4 cup margarine
1 package of marshmallows
3 cups Cheerios Cereal
3 cups Trix Cereal
Wax paper or 13-inch pan
Place margine in a large, safe microwave container and cook on high approximately 20-30 seconds or until margine is completely melted. Next, add the marshmallows to the bowl and microwave in 30 second increments, stirring between intervals. Once the marshmallows are completely melted add the cereal in portions, mix well with marshmallows. Continue this process until all of the cereal are mixed with the melted marshmallows.
Spread the cereal and marshmallow mixture out on wax paper or a greased pan, while pressing firmly and evenly distributing the mixture. Let set approximately 15-20 minutes, cut and enjoy!
